Regarding comments to previous post

Trina-
I talked to Mom about the post you had left regarding you being upset about people praying about President Hinckley. I was teasing saying that you didn't want him to be healthy or something like that. Mom took it too serious and so posted that. I know you meant nothing ill towards President Hinckley. Sorry for the confusion.

In other news: Joshua was eating turkey apple something with a straw. He just likes it that way.

News from Florida

Since I hadn't heard anything from Clarissa yet, I decided to call the mission and make sure she got there safe and sound. The secretary had to ask who's mother I was because they had both an Elder and a Sister Palmer who arrived the same day. She said that Clarissa is currently in a threesome with Sisters Parr and Crittenden and is currently serving near De Land. (I thought she said in Palm Cove but I can't find that either on the map or online. Maybe it was Palm Coast.)
A letter from her and one from the mission president along with a picture should be arriving in the next few days. We'll put them on her as soon as possible. Her P-day will be on Monday and she can email then. It's best to send mail, especially packages, directly to the mission home. (That's the address Amanda posted.)

Love ya,
MOM

OOPS

I was working on updating my webpage and accidentally messed up the main page. Hopefully one of you can fix it for me. SO SORRY!!!

The 12

I found this on LDS Living and thought I'd pass it on. There was some confusion, I think, about Trina's comments about President Hinckley. I think this is what she was trying to say. Yes we will miss him but we shouldn't be too sad because he must be very happy. It certainly helps to understand the plan and know that death is not the end.

Love ya,
MOM

The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles:
“Members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles express our heartfelt love and admiration for President Gordon B. Hinckley and the singular life of service he lived. He was our prophet, our leader, our brother and our friend. We feel a deep, personal loss at his passing. He unfailingly demonstrated his devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ, whose witness he was at home and abroad.

“We will miss his wit and his wisdom, his leadership and his love. However, we cannot but rejoice in his reunion with his beloved Marjorie, with his parents and other family members who have gone before, and with the prophets of God, both ancient and modern, among whose eternal ranks he now stands. As the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles we echo the voice of the Master, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant. … Enter into the joy of thy Lord.’ ”

Hey Everybody

There are new pictures up. sorry for the delay. I only did half of January because that is all I had time for. If you haven't gone on Jared's virtual tour yet you should give it a try. I feel that I could give a tour of the place if I went there. Pretty cool, Jared.

I am glad to hear that Mom is home, and I can only assume that Tawnia is better so I am glad about that also. Joshua had a slight fever today. Amanda noticed there was something wrong when he wasn't eating like he usually does (2 times his body weight per meal). He is sleeping now and is in good spirits.

We are keeping busy with work, work, church, and Joshua.

We hope you guys are all doing well.

I'm Home

Thank you all for your prayers while I was in the hospital. I got home about 11:30 today. The cardiologist wants me to continue with the medicine I started taking when this problem first started. Originally I was to take it for 10 days, which I did, but a short time after it ran out things started acting up again. He talked about using more drastic measures but decided on a more conservative approach. I was waiting to call everyone until I had more of an idea what was going on but I got a nice lecture from a few of you so I'll try better to keep everyone updated.

I love you all. You are absolutely wonderful

Maybe it's just me...

...but I forgot Clarissa's address for while she's in Florida - I found it on a post from long ago...if this isn't the correct one, let me know. If it is, hopefully this will help someone else who didn't have it written down!

missed one

I just wanted to let you all know that I added another piece to my page. It's actually Emily's Christmas present that I just realized I hadn't added! I also added a few credits to some pieces that used artwork from other sources besides myself.

Hinckley Video

For those of you who would like to watch an hour long video about President Hinckley's life, it can be found on ksl.com. (That would be a Utah news station.) I watched it earlier today. It is really good.

I will miss President Hinckley. I saw him several times at building dedication's while at Ricks and then in conference the times that I have gone. I was at a fireside last night. At the end of the fireside a member of our bishopric came in and then announced to us that President Hinckley had passed away. It was a bit of a shock. We all just sat there for a minute. Then my friend asked me to play a hymn. We sang the hymn that President Hinckley wrote the words for and then we sang "We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet." After that I had to go visiting teaching and was the one to break the news to my visiting teachee. She was very cute and said, "He'll be so happy to be with his wife!" We all know that that one has got to be true.

Anyway, If you want to keep updated on the latest ksl.com or lds.org would be the places to look.

President Hinckley

I first heard about his passing from an upstairs neighbor who'd received a phone call. One of my roommates was disappointed because now he can't sign her mission call -- she's twenty now and will be leaving in about a year. I remember how thrilled I was when he announced the temple construction plan to double the number of temples. I also remember being in the Tabernacle for a young women's conference and how silent and reverent it was when he entered. And I was at Ricks when he came to dedicate an administration building, and I remember how we all stood when he entered and he impatiently waved his hands at us to sit down.

We will miss him.

We'll miss President Hinckley

I think the biggest thrill I had was when President Hinckley announced that we would have 100 temples by the year 2000. By the end of that year there were 102. Now things are in place for moving family history work forward at a much quicker more efficient pace. There isn't much time until the millennium. What a marvelous age we live in and what a tremendous leader President Hinckley has been.

Thanks Jared for putting the pictures of Clarissa on her page for me. He also put some earlier ones on there so scroll down if you want to see them. I also enjoyed the zoo pictures. I really love seeing pictures of my grandchildren. (hint hint) I love you all but now it's time for sleep. Goodnight.

Love ya,
MOM

President Hinckley

My most significant memory of President Hinckley is that I was in the Tabernacle at the Relief Society session of the fall 1995 General Conference when he introduced the Proclamation on the Family. I've been in General Conference sessions 4 other times (fall 2001, spring 2002, 2 sessions in fall 2002) and heard President Hinckley speak 3 of those 4 times. Right now, even though it's 11 pm, I want to read through my Conference Notes journals and review all the things I wrote down from his talks.

I think I will call my temple babysitting swap buddy to arrange times when we can both go to the temple this week as a tribute to President Hinckley. The talk notes I'm looking at right now are from Saturday morning session, October 2002 - President Hinckley talked about the Nauvoo Temple dedication which had recently taken place, and he said that temples were constructed to be used - going to the temple shows respect to the Father. So we should utilize them - advance the Lord's work, make covenants, learn truths, seal families, and extend blessings to our ancestors.

I am on the system again

Today's big project was getting me back on the Blog again so I can put in my two cents. I have some different projects I have been working on. My top "100 list", next summer's vacation, Frank's Fabulous Films projects, and 2007 taxes to name some.

I also am signed up on "Youtube" and going to post some of my fabulous films. So you all have some more things to look forward too.

Love :p)

it's official

Summer can identify all of her Palmer cousins in pictures and say passable versions of all of their names. For example, Stevie is "See-bee." She has a hard time with the R's in Brooke and Bryan, but she does okay on their names.

I just went through Mindy's page and randomly opened pictures of all the cousins, and Summer named them all. Brooke, Bryan, Stevie, Allie, and Joshy. She doesn't even attempt Rosemary - she just says Baby. She also doesn't say Summer - she says "Ah-zuh." We don't know where she came up with that , but that's what she calls herself when you ask "Who's this" and point at her (if you say "What's your name," she doesn't get it), or when you show her pictures of herself.

Rosemary is starting to play with her toys a lot more - if I put her on the play mat or in the bouncer, she bats at the hanging toys and it keeps her occupied for a good while. She's also starting to interact with Adam and me more - she holds eye contact well and smiles a lot more, and is starting to coo at people. It's very cute. She's still hungry all the time.

Pray for Tawnia

I just heard that Tawnia was very sick and throwing up all day yesterday. It's too late to call her tonight but I'll call her tomorrow and see if I can find out what's up. She sent a text message to Eric but he read it too quickly and didn't get the whole message. He was supposed to let the rest of us know. He called me to see how she was doing and that was the first I'd heard. She was fine when Mindy talked to her on Sunday. We'll all pray for you now Tawnia. Get well!!!

New Letter from Clarissa!

I emailed Clarissa this morning, and told her about our discussion about typed vs. handwritten letters. She has a different reason to prefer letters over emails. This is what she said:

"It's okay. But I do like letters better then emails now. I have more time to read them."

10 plans for Trina and Adam's house

Mindy, I like your list. I've been thinking about this one for a long time, and Adam and I could probably do a top 10 list for things we plan to do with just the kitchen when we have a house. Here are some plans I have for a house when we can finally buy one ...

1 - Turn the front living room into the library. I doubt we'll have enough bedrooms to use one as a library, so I'll just use the living room. Floor to ceiling bookshelves with every kind of book, travel mementos, and framed pictures. In the middle of the room will be 2 or 3 comfy chairs (no couch) with a table and reading lamps.

2 - Have a piano, probably in the family room which will be our living area, since the usual living room will be the library.

3 - Have an herb garden in a large window in the kitchen.

4 - Have a pantry that's not just a closet or big cupboard, but an entire room.

5 - Have a patio just outside the kitchen with a grill and table and chairs, kind of an outdoor dining room.

6 - Have a lot more pictures on the walls throughout the house than we have now, and original works by the artists Mindy Palmer, Laurel Palmer, and James Caudle that we purchase in their art galleries.

7 - Have a porch swing, either on the front or back of the house, just so I can sit outside and read sometimes.

8 - Paint Summer and Rosemary's room purple and yellow. It's solid pink right now (varying shades of it, but all pink) and by then, we will all probably be tired of pink.

9 - Have an office with all the computer stuff and paper storage (so it's all out of my bedroom), and have a futon in there so it can double as a guest room as needed.

10 - NO work or storage stuff in the master bedroom. That's what the office and/or library are for. Only our bed, our clothes, a couch or chair so we can read, and nice things like candles and framed pictures and our beach sand collection (it's in little jars). It will be our comfy sanctuary, not where we work.

Ten things that make Mindy happy

MY FAMILY - Getting phone calls, looking at pictures, reading blogs, or most especially spending time with them! I have the best siblings, and the most adorable nieces and nephews! And the most amazing parents a person could ask for.

THE GOSPEL - Having the truth! The gospel brings hope and direction and JOY! What isn't happy about the gospel? (My scripture study topic of today is happiness and joy.)

TALKING - I've realized that I love to talk! But it definitely requires a listener.

DANCING - This is not something I ever would have put on this list before. But over the past two years I have really learned that I love to dance! Ballet and tap most especially, but that's probably because I haven't learned how to dance other styles. (Or maybe I also love learning?)

ART - Or, more specifically, creating art. There's just an incredible sense of satisfaction when I'm finished with a piece. I also love sharing my art, but I think that's because compliments make me happy.

PLAYING THE PIANO - I don't do this often enough, but it helps me relax. I also love playing the duets with Tawnia, and laughing at how many mistakes we make.

READING - I love how good books allow you to escape the world and visit another. It makes long hard days a little more bearable.

MUSIC - Playing it a little too loud and singing along in my car. Lately I've been listening to the mixed CDs that Tawnia made me for Christmas. I like them especially because I can sing along. Also, some music can be inspiring!

FLIRTING - Isn't flirting all about pretending to be happier than you are, until you ARE that happy? I need to find someone to flirt with.

BEING PRODUCTIVE - I like to check things off, and feel that I've accomplished something. I'm happier at the end of the day if I've done more than sit around. (That, and I like to make lists.)

happy happy

Happy birthday, Nathan! I would have called earlier except Summer and Rosemary weren't cooperating with any phone related activities, and by now, you should be out enjoying a date with Amanda that I do not want to interrupt. Please know that we did think of you today and we hope you're having a good time with life in general! We'll call you soon!

Love, Trina, Adam, Summer and Rosemary

Happy Birthday, Nathan

*clears throat and sings* This is your birthday song! It isn't very long! Hey!

Yay, it's Nathan's birthday. I hope you have a great time with Amanda and have a wonderful rest of the year. I already had some ice cream for you.

Love ya,
Emily

What's up with Mom

First of all I would like to add my birthday wishes for Nathan. I am really looking forward to playing with Joshua tonight while you go out to dinner.

Now to the topic at hand. I haven't been feeling well lately so I went to the doctor. I've been having a pain just under my rib - where my gall bladder should be - except they removed it a few years ago. Since the pain didn't go away, I had a CT scan yesterday. My digestive tract is fine but I have "pericardial effusion." That's fluid around the heart. I saw a cardiologist and he said that it's not effecting how my heart is working, yet. I have some medication to make the fluid go away and I have to go back in two weeks for an echo-cardiogram (an ultra-sound of the heart). Hopefully it will all be cleared up. Don't be scared, I'm doing just fine. Just another thing for me to keep a watch on.

I love you all.
MOM

Nate the Great is Twenty-Six

Happy Birthday to Nathan, Happy Birthday to Nathan. Happy BIRTHDAY dear Nathaaaan. Happy Birthday to Nathan! (Hooray!)

I hope you have a great birthday Nate and enjoy your EXCITING NEW family. I'm glad you're my little brother. I'm also glad you're not my older brother, because I think you would pick on me more if you were. Just kidding. You'd be nice.

I hope you eat some cake and ice cream. Hey! I might just do that myself today.

Your best friend (other than your wife and your friends),

Eric

Nathan

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!
I hope that this new year brings you much joy and happiness. (Of course life can't get much better than being a Dad to Joshua.)
Love,
Tawnia

Ten

Mom suggested in a comment that we all put up our top ten lists. I'm just curious which top ten I'm supposed to be putting on here. So I decided to put my top ten favorite ways to spend the little free time that I have now that school has started.

1. Talking on the phone. This hasn't always been a favorite and it actually depends on the person. I mostly talk to Jiffy or the princess.
2. Listening to music. My current favorite thing to listen to is the "Enchanted" soundtrack. I often really like a certain song and like to listen to it repeatedly, good thing I only do this when I'm alone or have headphones on.
3. Reading. I just finished reading the third book in the Peter and the Star Catchers series by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. Now I'm re-reading the first Leven Thumps book so that I can then read the second one that I got for Christmas.
4. Knitting. Yup, still working on Brooke's blanket. It is almost 3/4ths of the way done.
5. Attending church activities. Maybe this doesn't count as a free time activity, but I do take the time away from studying to do it... so it counts for me.
6. Hanging out with Friends. I mostly go to Roxanne and Tiffany's. We will talk, watch movies, or play games, depending on who is there and what we feel like doing.
7. Go for a walk. This is something that I haven't been able to do as much with the frigid weather we have here lately, but I do like to do this as often as possible. Sometimes it becomes combined with either talking on the phone or hanging out with friends.
8. Eating. I usually end up reading or watching a lecture while I eat a meal... but sometimes I let myself read whatever I want to during that time. (see number 3). This also includes cooking which is fun when you have time and someone to cook for.
9. Travel. I do enjoy travel, especially when I have the money and time for it. Which means I probably won't travel for awhile (do to lack of money not time)
10. Write to the family. Shouldn't we all be doing this in our free time?! This of course includes writing to Clarissa, I have already written to her twice, and posting on the blogs.

I really don't have much free time due to a VERY time intensive school semester, but these are the things I do when I have a moment.

Summer and Rosemary's Top Ten

As a jolly New Year's post, I have compiled the following for Summer's personal history / journal / scrapbook / baby book / whatever we're calling it these days.

SUMMER'S TOP TEN

1 - Favorite Movie: Mary Poppins, referred to as "Pops" and in the last week, "Popsy." She gets VERY excited at the scene where Mary Poppins flies in with her umbrella - she jumps up and points at the TV (and sometimes runs to it), squealing "Pops!!"

2 - Favorite toy: Mr. Potato Head. And Mrs. Potato Head. And Darth Vader Potato Head. We've had Darth Vader for awhile. She's been playing with him so much recently that we got her the other 2 for Christmas.

3 - Favorite food: just before Christmas, it was Clementine oranges. Now it's apples or carrots.

4 - Favorite activity: looking at pictures on the computer, particularly of Baby Joshua. She can even kind of say Joshua's name - it sounds like "Cha-cha" and is pretty much the same as saying Elijah, one of her playgroup pals. She likes other babies as well, like her own pictures and Rosemary's. But there's just something about Joshua for her.

5 - Favorite book: The Three Little Pigs. You have seen Mindy's video on youtube of Adam reading it to her. Thank you, Mindy, for preserving that!

6 - Favorite song: The Wheels on the Bus. She can do all the actions to it. This is also a recipient of her new "ee" addition to words. She requests the song by saying "Bus" and spinning her arms for the wheel action. In the last week or so, it is now "Bussy." Also, while you're taking a breath to start the next verse, she will request "Bussy" again and spin her arms.

7 - Favorite Sesame Street character: Elmo. When Elmo is in the scene on Sesame Street, she points at the TV and shouts, "Ah-mo!" It's similar to her reaction to Mary Poppins, but not quite the same level of excitement.

8 - Favorite place to go: it's a toss-up between the park, the library, and Nursery at church. The second the "Amen" is said on the closing prayer for sacrament meeting, she's pulling on our friend Beth's hand to take her to nursery. If we say we're going to the park, she runs to the front door and we have to remind her that she needs her shoes and her coat. And once at the park, she frequently takes off by herself down the street to the library, leaving whoever is watching her to catch up.

9 - Favorite article of clothing - shoes. I have no idea why she sometimes puts on only 1 shoe and goes around like that. She's done that since the summer when Mindy sent her Crocs.

10 - Favorite buddy: her Daddy.

ROSEMARY'S TOP TWO
Sleep
Eat

Seriously. She's still sleeping 20 hours a day, waking up only to eat, and then going back to sleep. She stays awake sometimes, and even for a few hours at a stretch. This last week, she's been back to sleeping all day long and pretty well through the night. She's growing FAST. At 3 months, she's of course wearing the 3-6 month size clothes, but she's at the upper end. She'll be in 12-month clothes by the summer. This actually works out quite nicely for me, because it means she can wear Summer's clothes from this past summer, and then on into the winter the same way. Even though they were born in opposite seasons, the clothing issue for handing things down will work itself out within 6 months.

I'd love to hear a Top Ten for the other kids!

Hooray for Clarissa!

Yeah, I remember all that fun first-day MTC stuff. I'm so excited for her. So much so, that I've updated her webpage. Go check it out! I'm going to try to keep it as current as I can over the next year-and-a-half.

Clarissa in the MTC

Wow, what a cool experience! For those of you who have never gone or taken someone to the MTC take the next opportunity you have to do it. I was the one who got emotional and cried during the singing of "Called to Serve" and then got Clarissa started. I think it's all pretty surreal for her still. I will be e-mailing Jared with her address in a moment so he'll put that on her page. She also will have the opportunity to e-mail on her preparation day even while in the MTC. I gave her the e-mail addresses that I knew off the top of my head.

The weather was absolutely crazy here this morning. It was snowing from some time in the middle of the night until about noon. I was worrying about driving in when my friend Janee called to see what I was doing today. She wanted to go to the temple to do initiatories. She ended up driving us into Provo (and even took some pictures of us) and then was supposed to go to the temple while she waited for me (except that she had forgotten her recommend, I found out later.) It worked out well for me and when I came out of the MTC the sun was shining and there was blue sky, I'm taking that as a good omen.

Clarissa wanted me to pass on a few of the funny things that the temple president said. One thing was that someone suggested they send missionaries out at sixteen. Two reasons, 1. they know everything, 2. their mothers wouldn't cry when they left. He also said that there are three sins that senior couples commit: sins of omission, sins of comission, and sins of no mission.

Here we are outside the MTC after we dropped off her luggage. I think it's a pretty good picture.
And here is Sister Palmer all official with her name badge. The orange sticker means that today is her first day... that way they know who needs help. She'll be fine.

After the MTC president and his wife spoke they showed the video "Called to Serve". The same one that I remember Eric watching everyday from when he got his call until he went into the MTC. Then we hugged goodbye... once for each of you. She didn't cry and I kept myself under control at that point.

Anyway, know I have to get to the homework that I haven't been doing for the last two days... school started Monday and I ALREADY feel behind! Yikes.
Love you all,
Tawnia

Bon voyage, Clarissa!!

Well, it's the big MTC day! Good luck, Clarissa - we're all praying for you! For most of Summer's life so far, we've been praying for Uncle Joe's safety in Iraq. She doesn't know a prayer without it. Well, he got back to the US last week, so now we shift gears to praying for Aunt Clarissa on her mission and that will be how Summer and Rosemary know prayer now.

It's also the big Adam-starts-a-paying-job day for the first time in 16 months - hooray!! It's only 15 hours a week, and it's only 10 bucks an hour. But it's something. It's at the American Bar Association helping to organize a mentor program between practicing attorneys and students in the area of international law.

What I learned today

I'll write later about what I learned in 2007 and I am working on getting some things ready to update my page and the timeline but I wanted to tell you about today's adventure.

Dad and I took Clarissa to the airport this morning. We left just before 4:00 and drove both cars to Newberg. That way Dad could leave the van there. As we were driving in I noticed that the roads were a little icy so I took my time. By Newberg the roads were fine and we had no problem getting to the airport and back.

The roads got more icy as I headed home from Newberg. At the 18/99 junction there was an accident and after getting through there I drove fairly slow the rest of the way. Then I saw brake lights in front of me again and stepped on my brakes. My car made a left turn and I was heading across the road into a truck. I had no control and I yelled "help." The car stopped. The truck and some other cars went by in front of me. Since there was no one in my lane I backed up, put on my emergency blinkers and drove the rest of the way home at 20 mph. When I got to the turn onto Madison there was no traffic so I didn't need to stop. When I got home I was shaking a bit and was very relieved to get the call that school was delayed for two hours. Mostly I felt loved and protected by a very loving Father in Heaven. I guess I still have work to do here because I didn't stop that car.

Just thought you'd want to know. Drive carefully and remember that I love you all.

MOM

pictures of shoes

Just like you asked, Eric, I have updated my page with a few pictures of shoes (and some other artwork, of course). I was actually going to update it last night, but the FTP site was giving me some grief. But it's working now, and I added seven new pictures. I also added three pictures earlier last month, that I hadn't mentioned, figuring you guys would find them if you looked. They're usually added to the end of the thumbnails, but I'm putting them in the order of when I finished them, and I didn't want to put up ones of Christmas presents until after Christmas. But still, anything new is in the last couple rows. I'm definitely having fun with my art, and am really looking forward to going back to school and learning more. I applied the other day, for BYU-Idaho, and have spent the last few days getting the necessary things together. I interviewed with the Branch and Stake Presidents yesterday, and had my transcript from Chemeketa sent over today. And now I just have to wait ... and then do all the financial aide paperwork. In the meantime, I'll continue drawing, and working, and reading.

Postin' on the Blog

Hi guys, just thought I'd take a few minutes to post on the famous family blog. I noticed from Nathan's post below (and from the tally on the blogger dashboard) that this blog has over 2,000 posts! That's amazing! I'm so glad we've been able to create and maintain this website. I love insanityinc.net and all its variety. Please let me know if you would like more help with HTML. I'd love to see more stuff from Emily and Trina (and Dad!). I hope to become a more frequent poster by starting to post via cell phone soon. We'll see how that goes.

Christmas was a lot of fun. It was great to have Tawnia and Mindy around. My only regret is not taking more time to talk. But we did talk, and it was nice to be with my sisters. Stevie and Allie really liked their aunts. Stevie was asleep when we dropped off Tawnia at the airport, but he was awake when we dropped off Mindy and he started crying as we pulled awawy: "Minny! Minny!" It wasn't a fake cry either. He had tears running down his face.

What I learned in 2007
First of all, I learned that I have a great family. Laurel, Stevie, and Allie are my favorite people in the world. I love them so much. I'm so excited to watch my children grow up. Mom's long stay this summer was beyond generous, and so was Dad's letting her go for so long. It was nice to see Dad and Clarissa for Allie's blessing, Tawnia and Mindy for Christmas, and it's been nice to talk to each of you on the phone. It was nice to talk to Nathan every Thursday night back at the beginning of last year, for example. Also, I really appreciated Laurel's family this year. Her sister Rachel's family are close by, and it's great for Stevie to have cousins to play with. Also, we got to see her parents and little sister Kathleen at the blessing and at Thanksgiving in Idaho. If I didn't know it before, I know it now. I have a great family.

I also learned that my Heavenly Father loves me and will give me what I need if I ask. Earlier this year, I fasted and prayed to know what to do with work, whether to move, or what to do. I was led to the job I have now, a few days before my previous company went bankrupt. Also, General Conferences this year were gifts from above; I received messages and promptings that have steered my life in wonderful ways. Last week I took some time to pray and ponder and write goals and resolutions for the year ahead. I've been blessed with continued guidance as I've asked for it.

That's all I can think of for now. Sorry for taking so long on the pictures. I'm looking forward to seeing a few more from others as well though... from Tawnia of taking Clarissa to the MTC, from Trina of the girls at Christmas, from Mindy of... shoes...

What I have learned in 2007

In no particular order:

1. How to change a diaper
2. How to make a bottle
3. How to hold a baby
4. How to fix a garbage disposal
5. How to change a light fixture, outlets, and switches
6. How to fix some plumbing
7. How to use Studio Recorder

I could keep going and going. It’s a good thing I wasn’t in school this last year, otherwise this list might be even more boring.

I learned how to be a dad – which of course is an ongoing learn as you go opportunity. I am glad that I get to learn how with Joshua. He is a good baby to learn from.

One last thing...

Come on Mom!!! You've been back from California for months. What's up with your page?

Learning

First I wanted to say thanks to Jared for getting all of those pictures up so quickly. And thanks to Nate and Manda for getting their pictures up also. Now on to the tough part...

What I Learned in 2007
Well, there is all of the cool stuff that I learned in my first semester back in college... listing it all would take way to long.
But I think this is more of "life lessons" that we learned. I can really only think of one major lesson that I learned and that is when you let the Lord be in charge of your life everything will work out. I can think of several times this year that I was getting by on faith alone, and somehow it all worked out.
I'm sure I learned a lot of other things, but I can't think of them right now. So there you have it.

Things I learned

Well I just got done typing on my blog that I was tired of typing and staring at the screen, but I think if I don't answer this question from Mom Palmer now, I probably won't, and I feel somewhat motivated, so here are SOME of the things I learned in 2007:

1. I can survive, function, and actually care for a child on barely any sleep, and apparently this is a skill given to all new mothers, but NOT given to college students (as I was) who whine and complain about only getting 5 hours of sleep (as I quite loudly did).
2. The quality I love most about my husband is his patience with me. Whether I was pregnant and hyper-hormonal, a new mom having a meltdown every day (surviving and functioning don't necessarily require emotional stability), a less new mom going crazy as an apartment manager, as well as thinking back to when I didn't have any of those things to worry about, Nathan is so incredibly patient with me, and it amazes me. He's also an absolutely wonderful dad.
3. It's hard to plan out how things will go when you have no clue what you're getting into - I mostly learned this in terms of how I expected to be able to leave things at Willamette after I had the baby. Unfortunately, I didn't really say any goodbyes or express to my student staff how much I appreciated them. You know, I probably still could...even if it is a year later. Well, there's a resolution!
4. When I make a commitment to Heavenly Father to be really faithful in reading scriptures and kneeling in prayer, (things I struggle to consistently do each day), He will answer my prayers in tons of different ways...and it really isn't that hard, even though it seems really hard sometimes.
5. Teaching callings affect the teacher more than they affect most members of the classes...preparing lessons and praying about them and reading about them strengthens my understanding so much, whereas the young ladies in my class may absorb things sometimes (and that's ok), I'm going to get something out of each lesson - what a blessing!
6. I'm not the youngest generation of my family anymore...this was a scary realization.
7. Christmas is a lot more special when you have little ones around.

I feel like I should have at least 10, but right now my brain is a little scrambled and those are the top lessons I can think of.

Love to you all and happy New Year!

A New Year Question

I asked a similar question last year, (or was it the year before?) What did you learn in 2007? We're supposed to be continually learning and growing you know. My last question didn't generate many answers so we'll see how this one goes.

We watched a few movies and watched the fireworks shot off by several neighbors. Here in Texas they can purchase fireworks that would be illegal in Oregon. Then we went to bed about 12:30. This morning we've been watching the Rose Pareade and getting ready to head back home. I wrote a few resolutions yesterday, and like Mindy I'll have to review my ones from last year, but not until I get home.

My goals this year include writing to Clarissa every week, finishing the stockings I didn't get done this year, and doing at least five things on my 100 list. (I finished seven last year.) There are several others but I packed the list.

God bless you all and have a WONDERFUL NEW YEAR!!!

Love always,
MOM
